How to tell a good chunky heel bootie from a poor one
A chunky heeled ankle bootie has to get you from a desk chair to a café table to dinner. Here are the parts that decide whether it can, and the parts that are only taste.
Start with the heel, not the height
Most people look at how tall a heel is. The better question is how wide it is where it meets the ground. A chunky heel earns its name when the base is roughly as wide as a thumb is long, so your weight spreads out instead of landing on a small point. Between two and three inches is the range where a block shape feels steady on a sidewalk grate and still looks like a heel. Then look from behind: the heel should sit under the center of your own heel, not tucked toward the toe or pushed out the back. A heel set too far forward tips the boot backward when you stand still, and that is hard to fix.
Read the materials like a label
Three things carry the boot: the upper, the lining and the sole. Leather and suede hold their shape and soften with wear. Polyurethane, often sold as vegan leather, costs less and wipes clean, but it does not stretch, so a snug fit stays snug. Turn the boot over. A rubber outsole grips wet pavement. A smooth hard plastic one slides. Inside, press the insole with a thumb. A thin sheet of foam flattens at once, while a layer that springs back will handle a full day of standing at a counter.
Fit at the ankle and the zip
A side zipper is what makes a bootie work on a rushed morning, so check that the zip runs the full length of the shaft and has fabric behind it to keep it off your skin. The opening should clear your ankle bone without gaping. Leave room in the toe box for your toes to spread a little, because a pointed shape that pinches in the shop will pinch harder at the end of the day.
What is only taste
Almond toe or round toe, black or tan, a smooth finish or a matte one: none of that can be measured. Pick the one you will wear with the two or three things already on your rail. A boot that suits only one outfit spends most of its life in the closet, however well it is made.
