The wooden bowl for a bare corner of the counter

A decorative bowl in mango wood, carved with vertical stripes and polished by hand according to the listing. It measures 10 by 6 by 2 inches, which suits a bathroom shelf, a kitchen counter or a windowsill in a small flat. It is meant to be looked at more than used.

The material is mango wood, and the listing says each bowl is carved and polished by skilled artisans. Because the wood grain is natural, the pattern differs from bowl to bowl, so yours will not match a photo exactly. The vertical stripes are carved by hand, which gives the sides a ridged texture. Whether that texture reads as rustic or refined is a matter of taste.

The size is 10 inches long, 6 inches wide and 2 inches deep, or 25.4 by 15.24 by 5.08 centimeters. At 2 inches deep it is a shallow dish rather than a deep bowl, so it holds a few small things well: candles, smooth stones or decorative balls, which are the uses the listing suggests. It also names a farmhouse entrance, a window frame, a cafe or an office as places for it.

The listing does not state the finish, whether the wood is sealed, or whether it is safe for food, and it gives no weight. Since it is sold as decor, it makes sense to treat it as a piece for display and not for serving. The listing also pitches it as a gift for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, birthdays or a housewarming, which suits an object of this size.
