Why a window seat cushion goes flat by winter

A folded throw and morning light look effortless, but the seat under them is usually the wrong depth or the wrong fill, and that is why it stops getting used.

The mistake is in the depth, not the fabric

Most built in window seats get measured for length and width, then the cushion gets ordered to fit, and depth is an afterthought. A seat that is 51 or 56 centimeters deep reads as generous in a photograph but sits wrong for actual use, since a person needs somewhere for their lower legs to go. Anything past about 46 centimeters of usable depth pushes a seated adult into either dangling feet or a slouch, and slouching is what wears a cushion out fastest, because the load stops spreading evenly across the foam.

Foam collapses before fabric does

The throw and the linen curtain in a scene like this survive for years. The cushion underneath does not, because most window seat cushions use a single slab of low density foam meant for looks rather than daily weight. A slab under about 30 kilograms per cubic meter density will lose a third of its loft within a season of regular sitting, and once it compresses, cold comes through the floorboards more directly, which is the opposite of what the wool throw was there to fix. A denser core, even just 5 centimeters of higher grade foam under a softer top layer, holds its shape and keeps the seat working as insulation, not only as decoration.

What to check instead

Before assuming a window seat needs more cushions or a heavier throw, it is worth checking what is underneath. A seat with real support does not need three layers piled on to feel usable, and a room with pale wood and white walls shows every dent and fold in a collapsed cushion far more than a busier room would. Fixing the base is less visible than adding a throw, but it is the part that decides whether the seat still gets used by the time the light turns cold and low in a few months.
