How to Choose and Keep a Throw Blanket That Gets Used

A throw blanket is only a good gift if it is still on the couch in February. Here are four steps that make that likely, from sizing to where it should live.

Step one: pick the size for one person

A throw is not a bedspread. At roughly fifty by sixty inches, it covers one adult sitting with knees bent, from shoulders to shins, and that is the whole job. Anything bigger drags on the floor and ends up folded in a closet. Anything smaller gets kicked off within ten minutes. If the recipient shares a couch, two people under one throw will quarrel over it, so a second blanket is the more honest gift.

Step two: choose the fabric by what it must survive

Fleece is light, warm for its weight and quick to dry, which matters because a blanket on a couch gets washed far more often than one on a bed. Rub a corner between two fingers. If it feels slick or thin, it will pill within a season. A pale color looks calm in a bright room, but it also shows coffee and pet hair, so be realistic about the household it is going into.

Step three: wash it before it is given

New fleece sheds loose fibers and can carry a factory smell. Wash it alone on a gentle cycle in cool water, dry it on low heat and skip fabric softener, which coats the fibers and leaves them matted. Take it out of the dryer a little early. Heat is what turns soft fleece stiff, and a blanket that feels scratchy on the first night rarely gets a second chance.

Step four: give it a place to live

A blanket stays in use when it is within reach. Fold it in thirds and drape it over the arm of the couch or the back of a chair, not in a basket across the room. A blanket that has to be fetched is a blanket that gets skipped on a tired evening. Say so when you hand it over, something as plain as: keep this one on the couch.

The test of this gift is not the unwrapping. It is whether, around the third month, the blanket is rumpled, slightly out of place and clearly being used. Size, fabric, washing and placement are the four things that decide it.
