How to pack one big bag for a workday that ends on a rooftop

A large shoulder bag can carry the office and the evening both, if it is packed in the right order. Here is the order, step by step.

A glass of something cold on a rooftop ledge at six o’clock only works if you did not go home first. That means one bag has to hold the whole day. Here is how to make a big, slouchy shoulder bag do that without turning into a black hole.

Step one: empty it and look inside

Tip everything onto the bed. A hobo shape has no corners and no firm walls, so nothing stays where you put it unless you give it a plan. While the bag is empty, check the lining. Polyester lining wipes clean with a damp cloth, which matters the day a pen leaks. Then look at the strap. A crossbody strap that adjusts on a metal slider is worth more than a fixed one, because you will want it short on a crowded bus and longer when you sling it across your body.

Step two: pack in three layers

  1. Heavy things first. A laptop in a sleeve, a water bottle with a screw cap, a paperback. Keep them low and against the side that rests on your hip, so the weight does not swing.
  2. The evening layer in the middle. Put lip balm, a hair tie, a phone charger with its cable and a folded scarf into one small zip pouch. A pouch is what makes a big bag usable: you pull out one thing instead of digging for six.
  3. The all day layer on top. Keys clipped to the inside ring, sunglasses, and a slim wallet from the matching set, since a wallet that matches the bag tends to be cut to fit its pocket.

Step three: make the switch at six

At the end of the workday, take out the laptop sleeve and leave it at the desk if you can. Shorten the strap so the bag sits at your hip, not your ribs. On the roof, hang the bag from a chair hook or keep it on your lap, not on the floor, where ledges are dusty and sometimes wet.

One note on color. Faux leather in black or tan goes with almost anything, but a bright shade is a matter of taste, not measurement. Pick the one you will still want to carry in a month.
