How to wear a long trench so the wind stays outside
A long oversized trench is a simple tool for a windy walk, if you check the weave, the overlap and the hem. Here is the order to do it in.
Start with the weave
A trench blocks wind because of how the cloth is woven, not because it is heavy. Check the tag for polyester, or cotton blended with polyester. A tight, smooth weave leaves little room for a gust to get through, and a loose, fuzzy one lets it pass. Hold the fabric up to a window. If you see light in tiny pinpricks, wind will find those gaps too. A lining adds warmth, but the outer shell is what does the blocking.
Fit it in four moves
First, button the whole front. A double breasted coat overlaps across the chest, and that overlap is the wind barrier. If the panels barely meet over a thick sweater, the coat is too small for how you plan to layer.
Second, raise your arms. Oversized should mean room through the shoulders and body, not cuffs hanging past your knuckles. If the sleeves cover your hands, roll them once and see whether you like the look. That part is taste, not measurement.
Third, check the hem. A long trench usually lands somewhere between the knee and the mid calf. Longer cuts block more air around the legs, but they also catch on stairs and bus steps, so walk up a few before you commit.
Fourth, pull the belt. Cinched, the coat stops flapping and holds heat. Left loose, it hangs straighter and looks more relaxed. Both are fine, so decide by the weather that day.
Use the lapel and the pockets
The wide lapel is more than decoration. Turn it up and button the top closure, and it shields your neck better than a thin collar would. Deep pockets give your hands somewhere to go when you stop outside for a coffee and a croissant, which is where a coat like this earns its keep: standing still in a breeze is colder than walking through one.
One last note on care. Polyester blends shrug off wrinkles, so hang the coat on a wide hanger on a wardrobe rail and let it rest. In a small flat, that single hanger spot is all it needs.
